Behaviour

Behaviour at Maple Hayes Hall School

At Maple Hayes Hall, an independent special school for pupils with Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD), we are committed to creating a positive, nurturing environment that supports the academic and personal development of every child. Our behaviour policy is rooted in the school's core values of Kindness, Respect, Community, Creativity, Curiosity, and Perseverance.

Promoting Positive Behaviour

We believe in emphasising reward over sanction, and we use a range of positive reinforcements to recognise and celebrate good behaviour. Our Merit Award system allows us to acknowledge pupils who demonstrate our key values, both in and out of the classroom. We also provide opportunities for leadership and responsibility, such as appointing prefects, to reinforce our community ethos.

Behaviour Expectations

Pupils at Maple Hayes Hall are expected to:

  • Behave in a calm and respectful manner

  • Show consideration for their peers and staff

  • Engage positively in lessons to support their own and others' learning

  • Move quietly around the school site

  • Take pride in their appearance and wear the correct uniform

  • Accept sanctions when necessary, understanding they are applied fairly

Supporting Positive Behaviour

Our approach to behaviour management is consistent and predictable, providing pupils with the structure they need to thrive. We use de-escalation techniques and tailor our support to individual needs, recognising that some pupils may require additional assistance to meet our behaviour standards. Where misbehaviour occurs, we respond promptly and proportionately, considering the context and impact of the incident. Sanctions such as detentions, removal from the classroom, or suspensions may be used, but only as a last resort. Our focus is on helping pupils understand how to improve their behaviour and get back on track.

Safeguarding and Wellbeing

The school takes a holistic view of behaviour, recognising that changes in a pupil's conduct may be an indicator of underlying issues or needs. We work closely with our designated safeguarding lead to ensure any concerns are addressed appropriately, with access to pastoral support or referrals to external agencies where necessary.

Working in Partnership

We believe that close collaboration with parents and carers is essential to supporting positive behaviour. We encourage families to be involved in the life of the school and to reinforce our behaviour expectations at home. By working together, we can help our pupils develop the skills and mindset to become responsible, respectful, and successful members of our community. At Maple Hayes Hall, our behaviour policy is designed to create an environment where all pupils can thrive, learn, and reach their full potential. By upholding our core values and providing a consistent, nurturing approach, we aim to transform the lives of the young people in our care.
